A Complete Guide to CBD

A Complete Guide to CBD

Here we endeavour to give you a complete guide to CBD (Cannabidiol) so you can make informed choices, especially when it comes to the daily wellbeing supplements you put into your body.

CBD is a chemical compound found in the Cannabis Sativa plant.  There are over 700 strains of cannabis, however Cannabis Sativa, Indica and Ruderalis are the most common.  Out of the hundreds of compounds which are prevalent in the cannabis plant the two very important ones, which you should inform yourself about, are THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol).

Sativa and Indica are the two main types of cannabis plants.   CBD (Cannabidiol) products are manufactured from the Sativa hemp plant as there is a much higher concentration of cannabinoids in the hemp plant. More importantly this plant has a lower level of the controversial compound called THC, the psychoactive ingredient of Marijuana.  All CBD products produced in the UK must adhere to UK Government Guidelines and the levels of THC in any product should be no higher than 0.2%.  The compound known as CBD is totally non psychoactive.

There are over 113 unique cannabinoids found in the Sativa hemp plant, and CBD is one of the most abundant of them…

What is CBD?

Cannabinoids (CBD) are plant compounds which stimulate the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS).  These cannabinoids are naturally found in the body and in many nutritious vegetables and fruits, including kale, broccoli, and Echinacea.  It is most abundant in the hemp plant Cannabis Sativa and when ingested in concentrated form, CBD is known to promote balance and tranquillity to the body and mind. Unlike THC, which has strong psychoactive effects, CBD is non-psychoactive and has a calming effect….

It was during a project in the 1930s that CBD and THC were first isolated. But the chemical structure of the CBD wasn’t described until the early 1960s. There’s been a debate as to whom was responsible for the discovery of CBD and THC –  Raphael Mechoulam (an Israeli organic chemist and professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem) or Roger Adams who was responsible of isolating CBD back in the 1930s in the US and by Alexander Todd at about the same time. Raphael Mechoulam is considered  the ‘grandfather’ of CBD research and we are very grateful to him and his team for their important discovery.

How CBD affects the body and the brain

The human brain is made up of numerous neurons which communicate with themselves through a structure known as synapses. Synapses consist of a receptor and a transmitter. When a synapse is active the transmitter releases molecules that are absorbed by the receptor, but when a synapse is inactive there is no communication between the transmitter and the receptor.  CBD interacts with the brain in a similar manner.

Can you get high from CBD oil in the UK?

Taking a high quality CBD oil, whether that be full spectrum CBD or an isolate, as part of your daily wellbeing routine will not get you high, as CBD oil traditionally doesn’t contain THC. So long as the THC content falls at or below 0.2% in products sold in the UK, CBD (Cannabidiol) is perfectly legal.  CBD is sold in the UK as a food supplement and as such, just like vitamins which are sold on every High Street, CBD is regulated by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and conforms to UK Government Guidelines.

Not all CBD oil is created equal.  Remember this. 3rd party Lab reports should clarify the quality of ingredients and also the purity and quantity of CBD content.

Different ways to consume CBD

CBD is available in several forms. This allows people to tailor their preferred method of use to their specific need. Here are the most common ways to consume CBD:

CBD Edibles

CBD Edibles are one of the most popular ways to take CBD. They are affordable, portable, discrete, and tasty. There is also no guesswork involved. While CBD oils are incredibly beneficial in their own way, more and more people are starting to prefer the chewy (and tasty) doses of CBD gummies. They are a great fun way to get your daily cannabidiol fix and indeed they generally offer all the same benefits as conventional CBD oil. You know exactly what dose you are taking. CBD gummies (and other forms of CBD edibles) can be a wonderful option for those who do not enjoy the “earthy” taste of CBD oil.  Click here to see our range of CBD Edibles.

CBD Vaping

Inhaling vaporized CBD oil, like e-cigs for CBD, is the fastest way to experience effects. Compounds are inhaled and absorbed directly from the lungs into the bloodstream. CBD vape oils can be a very potent (and tasty) method of consuming cannabidiol, but the idea of inhalation is (understandably) not appealing to every individual.

The jury is still out though, on whether vaping does damage to delicate lung tissues. You should proceed with caution if you choose to vape CBD.  Click here to see a full range of CBD Vaping.

Using the pipette provided, you can easily drop the required number of drops under your tongue – wait 60 seconds before swallowing. This is a very common method of consuming CBD as the membranes under the tongue absorb the CBD into your bloodstream quicker than if it had to travel through to your gut. CBD oil can also be used as a moisturiser for chaffed skin…Click here to see a full range of CBD oils.

CBD Topicals

CBD topicals are generally available as skin balms, creams, lotions, and lip balms that are applied directly on your skin. They provide mainly local effects with only minimal amounts absorbed and circulated through the skin. They are not as potent as most of the other methods of consumption, but they are safe and non-toxic.

It’s the best choice for users who desire rapid local effects and want to improve their quality of life at the same time, e.g., in case of sports recovery, skin improvement or when experiencing local pain or inflammation.

CBD Tinctures

CBD tinctures are very much like oils, concentrated liquid hemp extracts made from the Cannabis Sativa plants and used as a herbal medicine for the stresses and strains of daily life. It’s best applied utilising a pipette provided to the underside of the tongue, for fast release of the benefits of CBD into the bloodstream. This method of application is called sublingually – where about 2 drops are put under the tongue through a dropper. The CBD enters the bloodstream very quickly through the sublingual artery. A maximum of 70mg of CBD is recommended on a daily basis, although according to the WHO (World Health Organisation) you cannot overdose on CBD.

CBD Balms

CBD balms sometimes appear to be solid and waxy.  If you’re looking for a higher than average potency, then Enjoy CBD recommend NuLeaf Naturals CBD balm for sensitive skin.  There are TWO sizes available – 300mg or 600mg per jar.  NuLeaf Naturals proprietary genetics allow them to naturally create a whole plant CBD extract that is highly concentrated in CBD and contains significant amounts of additional cannabinoids like CBC, CBG,CBN and more.

Cannabinoids work synergistically with each other and are more effective when they are found together versus when they are isolated.  This is known as the entourage effect.
